If you can write an email, you can use AI. That's the one idea to hold on to for this whole course.
Welcome to AI at Work. Hi there, I'm Steve. And over seven short lessons, I'll show you how to use AI tools safely and well in your everyday job. You don't need a technical background. If you've ever typed a question into a search box, you're already most of the way there. We'll go one small step at a time, and by the end, using AI will feel as normal as sending that email.
So why is your company adopting AI now? It usually comes down to three things. First, time. A lot of work is first drafts, summaries, and hunting for information. AI is fast at all three.
Second, quality. A good AI tool is a patient second pair of eyes. It can tighten a paragraph, spot what's missing from a plan, or explain a confusing document in plain language.
Third, safety. People are already using AI at work, often on personal accounts nobody has checked. Approved tools with clear rules protect you and the company. Your leaders may have their own reasons too.
Here's what changes. You'll have approved AI tools to help with parts of your work, like drafting an email, summarizing a long thread, or getting a first pass at a report. You'll learn a few simple habits for asking well and for checking the answer. Because AI can sometimes be confidently wrong. And you'll learn the rules about what information can and can't go into these tools. That's module three that you will see later, and it's the most important one.
Just as important is what stays the same. You're still the expert in your job. AI doesn't know your customers, your colleagues, or why a process works the way it does. You do. You're still responsible for your work. If it goes out with your name on it, you check it first whether you wrote it or AI helped, and you still make the decisions. AI can suggest. It can't decide.
If part of you is wondering what this means for your job, that's a fair question and a common one. Knowing how to use AI well is becoming a valuable skill at work, and this course is about building it in you. If you have questions about your own role, ask your manager. That's a conversation worth having.
One more thing. In this course, you'll see me use Claude and Gemini. Your company might use Microsoft Copilot, ChatGPT, or something else. That's fine. The techniques work the same way in any of them. Always use the tool your company has approved. Before the demo, grab the Personal AI Goals worksheet below this video. It asks you to name a few tasks that eat up your week. Keep it handy, because we'll come back to it later in the course.
Look at what I just typed. No special commands, no code. It's the same thing I'd write to a coworker if I wanted help. And here's a first draft in a few seconds. It's good, but not quite right. So I reply the way I would to a person. Also, don't worry if you make mistakes. Just try and get across your main point. AI does a really good job of understanding what you're trying to convey. It really doesn't care, even if you type as bad or as slow as I do. There it is, shorter and kept everything I asked for.
Notice I'm still the one checking it. I read it over before it goes anywhere, because it goes out with my name on it. That's the whole idea. If you can write an email, you can use AI.
In the next module, we'll look at how these tools actually work and why they sometimes get things confidently wrong.

For HR and L&D: AI at Work is a 49-minute AI acceptable use training course.
